June Community Message from Administrators
As we welcome June, we reflect on a school year filled with growth,
resilience, creativity, and connection. Moving toward the final weeks of the
school year, we remain focused on joy, belonging, and celebrating the many
ways our students have grown both academically and personally.
Celebrating Our Community
June is an important month of cultural, identity-affirming, and faith-based
recognition. Members of our community may observe any number of occasions
including National Indigenous History Month, Pride Month, Italian Heritage
Month, Portuguese Heritage Month, and Filipino Heritage Month.
Throughout June, students will continue engaging in learning connected to
Indigenous histories, cultures, and perspectives. June 21st marks National Indigenous
Peoples Day, an important opportunity to honour and celebrate First Nations, Inuit, and Métis
Peoples.
These observances provide opportunities for learning, reflection, and celebration while
honouring the many identities, voices, and lived experiences that strengthen our Stonebridge
community.
Celebrating Learning & Spring Highlights

school. It was a joyful celebration of creativity and student voice.

Filipino Heritage Month
The month of June is Filipino Heritage Month, as proclaimed by the government of Ontario in 2021. Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2021. Ontario is home to over 337,000 people of Philippine origin. The Filipino Canadian community has made and continues to make significant contributions to the cultural, social, and political fabric.

Italian Heritage Month
The month of June is Italian Heritage Month as proclaimed by the government of Ontario in 2010. Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2010.

National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day
June is National Indigenous History Month and is a time to celebrate the diverse cultures of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities, as opposed to focusing on what has been done to them. The Canadian Government unanimously declared June as National Indigenous History Month in 2009 through a motion in the House of Commons. The month, which includes National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), is a perfect time to reflect upon the long relationship between the many different First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples of Turtle Island and Canadians throughout history. For students and Educators, it is a good time to become better acquainted with the different First Peoples who share this land with us.
June 21st was declared National Indigenous Peoples Day in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo Leblanc. The day was chosen in consultation with some national organizations for First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples, including the Assembly of First Nations, and coincides with the summer solstice, which is significant for some First Nations people.
Portuguese History and Heritage Month
The month of June is Portuguese Heritage Month as proclaimed by the government of Ontario in 2001. Legislative Assembly of Ontario
Canada is home to more than 480,000 Canadians of Portuguese descent, one of the largest Portuguese diasporas in the world. Portuguese Canadians have made and continue to make significant contributions to the cultural, social, and political life of our communities.
The month of June, particularly June 10th, holds significance for the Portuguese community. June 10 is the anniversary of the death of Luís de Camões, a famous Portuguese poet who often wrote about Portugal's history.
Bike to School Week
Bike to School Week (B2SW) is a celebration of the journey to school by two (or three!) wheels that takes place every year during the last week of May. This year, we’re celebrating Bike to School Week from June 1 – 5, 2026.
Schools across Ontario can participate by registering on the Bike to School Week webpage, along with promoting biking as a fun way to travel to and from school and around the neighbourhood.
Bike to School Week provides an opportunity for students to try riding a bike to school for the first time, learn new skills, connect with others, or have fun exploring the neighbourhood and nature.
Bike Week at Stonebridge
Dear Parents and Community Members,
We are excited to announce that June 1–4 will be celebrated as Bike Week at our school!
Bike Week is a wonderful opportunity to encourage healthy living, physical activity, and environmentally friendly transportation. We invite students and families to participate by riding their bikes, scooters, or other active modes of transportation to school whenever possible. (please make sure you walk your bike or scooter on school property)
This initiative helps promote:
- Healthy and active lifestyles
- Environmental awareness and reducing pollution
- Road and bike safety
- Community involvement and school spirit
We encourage all students to remember the importance of safety by wearing helmets, following traffic rules, and using bike locks when needed.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to build a healthier and greener community. We look forward to seeing everyone participate in Bike Week!
Sincerely,
Eco-Club Team
Stonebridge Food Drive
Stonebridge's Markham Food Bank Donation
Dear Stonebridge Families,
Our school will be hosting another Food Drive in support of the Markham Food Bank
from June 1st–21st.
During the summer months, donations to the food bank often decrease significantly,
while the needs of many families in our community remain high. To help support
this need, we are collecting non-perishable food items such as:
● Canned foods (vegetables, soup, beans, tuna)
● Dry pasta and rice
● Cereal boxes
● Peanut butter
● Crackers and snacks
● Other unopened, non-expired pantry items
If you are able, please consider donating. Donations can be placed in the front
foyer/outside the main office.
Every donation, big or small, can make a difference in supporting families in need
within our community.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.
Thank you for your kindness and generosity!
Sincerely,
Stonebridge Student Leadership Team

Kindergarten registration for the 2026/2027 school year started on Friday, January 16, 2026. Children who turn four or five years old during 2026, live within the school boundary and whose parents/guardians are public school tax supporters will be
eligible to register for Kindergarten.
There are several ways you can register for Kindergarten:
Online - Families can access the online Kindergarten registration information at www.yrdsb.ca/kindergarten > Registration. It is recommended that families use a laptop or a desktop computer rather than a mobile device to complete this registration.
By email - Families can download the Elementary School Registration Form at www.yrdsb.ca/kindergarten and email the completed form to their school email address. Email addresses can be found on the school website.
By phone - Families can request support from the school Principal/Vice-Principal to complete the registration form on their behalf by collecting the required information by phone. Families can request an interpreter, if needed, during this phone conversation. Call your local school.
By mail or appointment. You can mail completed applications to the school, or request an appointment to drop-off your completed paper application form.
Once you have completed your application, the school will contact you to make an appointment to review and verify the required documents.
Our Kindergarten programs are caring and welcoming where children learn through exploration, play and inquiry. You can learn more at www.yrdsb.ca/kindergarten. We look forward to welcoming our new students and families to the school.

Nut & Scent Free Environment
This is a reminder that many students and staff have life threatening allergies to nuts. As a result, we ask that all snacks and lunches are nut free. Please take the time to read the labels on snacks to ensure they are nut safe. We also ask that you do not use peanut butter substitutes such as Wow Butter. Nutella is a nut product and must not come to school.
The chemicals used in scented products can make some people sick, especially those with fragrance sensitivities, asthma, allergies and other medical conditions. To help keep the air healthy for everyone, our school has a scent-free policy.
