Message from the Administrators

Dear Stonebridge Families,

September has been an exciting and busy month as we all settled into the new school year! We sincerely thank all of our families and students for your patience and understanding during our school reorganization process—it has made the transition much smoother for everyone.

We’re thrilled to welcome two new teachers to our Stonebridge family: Ms. Karen Ho, who will be teaching Grade 1, and Ms. Alexis Chan, joining us as our Prep teacher. We’re confident they’ll be wonderful additions to our team.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Curriculum Night! We truly appreciate the time you take to engage with our school community. It was wonderful to see so many families meeting teachers and exploring classrooms. If you’d like to discuss your child’s progress or have specific questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher to arrange a convenient meeting time.

On September 9th, School Start-Up Forms were sent home. A big thank you to families who have already completed and returned them! If you haven’t done so yet, please take a few moments to submit these important forms. They help us ensure your child’s information is accurate and up to date. Each child requires a separate form, and Stonebridge accesses this information directly. If you prefer to complete paper copies or have any questions, feel free to contact the school office for assistance.

Our School Council held its first meeting on September 30th, where we elected our new executive for the 2025/2026 school year.

Co-Chairs: Michelle Persia and Kar-Woon Choy

Co-Vice-Chairs: Arvin Qing and Arthur Zhu

Treasurer: Josepine Fu

Our secretary position is vacant.  Please let us know if you are interested in that position.

Congratulations to our council members! Upcoming School Council meetings will be held in the staffroom at 6:00 PM on the following dates: Nov.4; Jan. 13; March 3; May 5. We warmly invite all Stonebridge families to attend these meetings to stay informed, share your input, and help plan exciting events. There are also opportunities to join various committees—come be a part of our school community!

Get those smiles ready—Picture Day is scheduled for October 16th! All classes will have their photos taken that day. If your child is absent, don’t worry—re-takes will be held on November 27th (note: re-takes are for individual portraits only, not class photos). These are the only two opportunities for student photos this year.

Lastly, a huge thank you to Ms. Syed for organizing our annual Terry Fox Run on September 29th. Our students proudly walked and ran to support cancer research. We are proud to report that we raised over $1300 for cancer.  Thank you to all families for your generous donations and ongoing support of this important cause.

We’re looking forward to a fantastic year ahead, and as always, thank you for being such a vital part of our school community!

Dates of Significance

Korean Heritage Month

The month of October is Korean Heritage Month as proclaimed by the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario in 2017. Ontario is home to approximately 80,000 Korean Canadians. The migration of Koreans to Ontario began after the Second World War (1939-1945) and Korean War (1950-1953).

Korean Canadians have and continue to make important contributions to the economic, political, social and cultural fabric of Ontario’s society.

Hungarian Heritage Month

The month of October is Hungarian Heritage Month as proclaimed by the Legislative of the Province of Ontario in 2022.

After the Hungarian Uprising on October 23, 1956, Canada welcomed over 37,000 Hungarian refugees. Since then, Canada is now home to more than 350,000 Hungarian-Canadians. The Hungarian-Canadian community has made and continues to make significant contributions to cultural, social, and political fabric.

Latin Heritage Month

The month of October is Latin American Heritage Month. As proclaimed by the Government of Canada, October is a month to recognize and celebrate the significant contributions of the Latin American community to the social, economic and political fabric of the nation.

Latin American heritage and identities are vast, diverse and intersectional. People with Latin heritage and of the diaspora may come from Spain, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.

Each year, during October, people of Latin heritage around the world come together and pay tribute to their shared culture, experiences and histories. Such celebrations around the globe include Hispanic Day (Dia de la Hispanidad), the Day of the Cultures (Dia de las Culturas), Day of the Race (Dia de la Raza), Day of Respect for Cultural Diversity (Dia del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural) and Day of Indigenous Resistance (Dia de la Resistencia Indigena).

Islamic Heritage Month

October is Islamic Heritage Month. The Government of Canada declared the month of October as Canadian Islamic History Month in 2007. In 2016, Ontario passed the Islamic Heritage Month Act to recognize, celebrate and affirm the significant contributions that Muslims continue to make as part of the vibrant social, economic, political and cultural fabric of this province.

Women’s History Month

October is Women’s History Month in Canada, a time to celebrate the women and girls from our past, and our present, who are contributing to a better, more inclusive Canada.

In 1992, the Government of Canada designated October as Women’s History Month, marking the beginning of an annual celebration of the outstanding achievements of women and girls throughout Canada’s history.

This year’s theme, Women at Work: Economic Growth Past, Present and Future, highlights the significant contributions women have made to the workforce throughout history, and the critical role they continue to play in driving economic innovation and progress that has benefited Canada as a whole.

Let’s continue to honour women who have led by example and inspired other women and girls to realize their full potential by pursuing careers across all industries including those in non-traditional fields.

IWALK Month

Let’s Get Walking!

Celebrate active modes of transportation like walking and wheeling along with other students and staff across Ontario during IWALK Month, which officially kicks off Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

International Walk to School Month (IWALK) is an annual celebration of active transportation that takes place around the world throughout the month of October.

Plan a celebration to encourage and motivate students and families. More information can be found at Ontario Active School Travel

When walking to school, here are important safety tips to remember:

· Look all ways before you cross the street. Always STOP, LOOK and LISTEN before crossing.

· Always cross at designated intersections and crosswalks, where possible.

· Before crossing, stop at the curb and make eye contact with drivers – make sure they see you.

· Obey all traffic signals and signs.

· Stay alert and minimize distractions – place cell phones and headsets in your bag

· Always walk on a sidewalk, where possible.

For anyone who cannot walk or cycle to school every day, we encourage you to try choosing an active mode of travel two or three times a week. If you drive, consider parking a few blocks away and walking the rest of the way. Even using active travel a few times a week can make a big difference.

If you choose to drive, please be mindful of students who walk and cycle, drive slowly and be highly vigilant of your surroundings. If your child is eligible for the bus/student transportation, have them walk to the bus stop. Riding the bus is sustainable!

Benefits of Active School Travel

· improve physical and mental health and academic achievement

· encourage social interaction and build connections

· develop road safety skills

· develop lifelong healthy habits

· improve air quality, traffic congestion and safety around school zones

· parents and family members meet other families in your neighbourhood and at the school

· give you additional time to connect with your child

· enhance the sense of community in our neighbourhood

Nut & Scent Free Environment

This is a reminder that many students and staff have life threatening allergies to nuts. As a result, we ask that all snacks and lunches are nut free. Please take the time to read the labels on snacks to ensure they are nut safe. We also ask that you do not use peanut butter substitutes such as Wow Butter. Nutella is a nut product and must not come to school.

The chemicals used in scented products can make some people sick, especially those with fragrance sensitivities, asthma, allergies and other medical conditions. To help keep the air healthy for everyone, our school has a scent-free policy.
